Hit

A count of the number of times that an element existing on a server (including pages, graphics, unlinked files, stylesheets, etc) is requested. A single pageview can generate several hits, as each individual graphical element, stylesheet, database request (occasionally), etc, counts as a hit. For this reason, the hit is no longer considered an accurate reflection of web traffic, and is a term so outmoded as to appear unprofessional when used in communication with potential advertisers. These days, pageviews and unique visitors are the standard measurements of web traffic.
